Wine Prompt Guide — How to Use AI for Wine

Turn vague wine questions into precise prompts that get sommelier-level answers from any AI.

Tell the AI who should answer — e.g. 'Act as an Advanced Sommelier.'

Name the wine, region, vintage, level, or dish instead of asking broadly.

Say what a useful answer looks like — a table, 3 picks, one line each.

No AI is 100% right — confirm the critical details before you rely on them.

First — what is a prompt?

The one idea that changes how you use every AI, everywhere.

Say who's asking — a somm on the floor, a student, a curious wine lover.

Say what you're doing — studying, building a list, prepping service.

Same question, two very different answers

About this AI — and where it can be wrong

The honest version. Read it once and you'll get more out of every answer.

Exact numbers — hectares, yields, percentages, production figures. Small producers. Anything that changed in the last year or two.

Structure and reasoning — why a region tastes the way it does, how a classification works, pairing logic, service language.

Anything you'll put on a list, print on a menu, or write in an exam. Check the producer, the consorzio, or the estate's own tech sheet.

Foundations — how to talk to AI about wine

Three habits that upgrade every wine question you'll ever ask.

The curriculum — chapter by chapter

Seven chapters, organized like a wine textbook. Pick your track.

The pro moves — including the one that keeps AI honest.

Add any of these — instant upgrade

Four elements that make every prompt better.

Quick producer & region research

Reading the table's energy

Act as an Advanced Sommelier.

Watch what happens to "What is Chablis?" when you brief the AI properly.

We take the top AI models —

ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini

— and train them with real sommelier experience. The result: better wine answers, in one place. No AI is 100% right, so this guide shows you how to ask well.

A prompt is the message you type to an AI. It is

not a search keyword — it's a briefing.

The AI can't see your situation, your level, or what you'll do with the answer. It only knows what you tell it.

Think of a guest ordering wine.

leaves the sommelier guessing — you'll get something safe and forgettable.

"Ribeye, I love Northern Rhône, under $90"

gets a great bottle on the first try. AI works exactly the same way: the quality of the question sets the ceiling on the quality of the answer.

A polite, generic paragraph: Chablis is a wine region in northern Burgundy known for crisp Chardonnay… True — and nothing you couldn't read on the back of a label. Any AI gives this answer to this question.

“Act as an Advanced Sommelier. Brief me on Chablis: the place, the soil, the four levels from Petit Chablis to Grand Cru, 3 producers worth knowing, one food match. I'm a wine student — keep it exam-ready.”

A structured briefing you can study from: Kimmeridgian soil and why it matters, the four appellation levels with what separates them, named producers, and language you can use at the table.

Same AI. Same topic. The prompt is the entire difference.

These habits work on any AI assistant you'll ever use — SOMM DIGI is simply where the AI is trained for wine. And one honest note: no AI is 100% right. A strong prompt raises the quality; verifying the key facts seals it.

SOMM DIGI is AI, and AI can be wrong.

Not sometimes-in-theory — genuinely wrong, in a calm confident voice, on a fact you were about to put on a list. There is no AI anywhere that is right 100% of the time, and anyone selling you one is selling you something.

What we can do is narrow it. We take the leading AI models and train them on real sommelier work — how the wine world actually teaches a region, an appellation law, a deductive grid — and we instruct ours to say “I'm not certain of that figure” instead of inventing one. It still gets things through. Knowing where it slips is what makes you the one who catches it.

✓ If you think it's wrong — say so

“That's not right — Chianti Classico allows other grapes. Check it and correct yourself.”

Challenging it works. It will re-check that specific claim and correct itself if you're right — or hold its ground and tell you

, naming the appellation rule behind it. Either way you end up with the real answer and the reasoning, which is worth more than a reply you simply trusted. This is a habit worth carrying to every AI you use.

One more thing, plainly: SOMM DIGI is independent.

We name certification levels and exam formats throughout this guide because that's what people here are studying for — describing an exam is not the same as running it. Every question, flashcard and answer on SOMM DIGI is written by us. Nothing here is an official syllabus, past paper, or approved course of any body, and we never claim it is.
